Gorilla habitats

Gorillas live in troops of up to 30 individuals. The troops are led by a dominant silverback male, who is the only breeding male in the group. The silverback protects the troop and organizes their daily activities.
The gorilla diet consists mainly of plants, including roots, shoots, leaves, flowers and fruits. Gorillas eat a variety of plant foods depending on what is available in their habitat. They have been known to eat over 100 different plant species in a year!

Do gorillas climb trees?

They will climb trees to feed on young leaves, fruits and nuts – but only when necessary as it takes a lot of effort!
Why do gorillas climb trees?
Most gorillas live in lowland tropical rainforests, typically below 2,000 metres (6,600 ft). They eat a variety of foods, including fruit, leaves, stems, flowers and bark. Gorillas are very selective eaters and are specific about the parts of the plants that they eat depending on the season. In some areas where food is less abundant, gorillas travel long distances each day as they forage for food.
Gorillas build their nests high up in trees to keep themselves safe from predators at night. Nighttime is when most gorillas sleep in their nests. But during the day, they climb down to the ground to eat, play and travel.
Conclusion
While there are documented cases of gorillas descending from trees headfirst, this does not mean that they are capable of climbing back up the same way. In fact, gorillas are much better equipped to climb up trees than they are to climb down them. This is due to the fact that gorillas have long arms and legs that help them grip onto tree trunks and branches, while their knuckles enable them to maintain a firm grip even when they are hanging upside down.
